Closing the Empathy Gap:
A Dialogue-Driven AI Fast-track Financial Understanding Tool for Couples. This project explores how AI can help newlywed couples build financial consensus, especially in loan-related contexts. We identified common friction points in daily spending decisions (e.g., food, housing, transport) and created a gamified AI experience to simulate these scenarios.

The AI encouraged dialogue, helped partners understand each other’s spending habits, and learned from their behavior. 80% of users found the experience helpful. Based on past spending, the AI proposed monthly budgeting plans. Most users accepted the AI as a silent observer and advisor.

This project shows AI’s potential to support trust, communication, and shared financial planning in relationships



Interview Objectives:
Understand how newlyweds, starting from scratch, gradually develop a shared understanding and practical approach to "fair division" in both daily life and key events through communication, trial and error, and adjustment.



Persona

Although each persona demonstrates different behavioral patterns in financial communication, they all share an urgent need for a safe discussion space that allows both partners to calm down and engage in meaningful dialogue. This space should enable them to confront disagreements directly while fostering an inclusive and open conversational atmosphere—particularly in the evenings when both partners are at home.

Hypothesis
We hypothesize that by combining a planning system (using playful mechanisms to align values and build consensus) with an execution system (lightweight reminders to support daily spending coordination), couples will not only manage shared finances more effectively but also reduce misunderstandings, foster open communication, and strengthen trust in their relationship.
