“A city that separates where we live from where we work also separates us from opportunity, time, and well-being.”
Modern high-density cities like Shenzhen are facing critical urban challenges due to uneven distribution of infrastructure and excessive commuting times. The traditional functional zoning approach—separating industrial, residential, and commercial areas—has resulted in social and spatial inequality. As redevelopment prioritizes industrial areas, people are forced to live farther from where they work, leading to daily commutes that often exceed 45 minutes. This not only reduces quality of life but also increases environmental and social costs such as air pollution, noise, and traffic congestion.
“When essential services are within 15 minutes, we don’t just design for convenience — we design for equity, connection, and resilience.”
Through phased transformation of housing, landscape, and infrastructure, we aim to build a resilient, nature-integrated, and equitable 15-minute community for the future city.
Furthermore, we incorporate VR/AR technologies to enhance user participation and optimize the client-architect collaboration process. Through phased development and landscape integration, the proposal creates a more walkable, liveable, and socially equitable urban future.
“As cities face increasing pressure from rapid urbanization, climate change, and social inequality, the future of urban design lies in creating decentralized, adaptable, and human-centered communities that integrate technology, nature, and equity into everyday life.”
We propose a decentralized and integrated urban system based on horizontal and vertical 15-minute communities composed of multi-functional skyscrapers. Each unit combines residential, commercial, educational, medical, and recreational functions, ensuring that all essential services are within a 15-minute walking distance.
The design adopts modular construction to allow flexible housing and infrastructure solutions that can be adapted over time.
